Towards an Understanding of the Break-up of Invariant Tori

چکیده
Theories describing the existence, destruction and ultimate fate of invariant tori for Hamiltonian systems of 11/2 or 2 degrees of freedom (or equivalently area preserving mappings) are well established. Similar results for higher dimensional Hamiltonian systems have proved elusive. We discuss several techniques for studying the existence and break-up of invariant tori for 21/2 degrees of freedom (or 4 dimensional symplectic mappings): the anti-integrable limit, power series expansions of the conjugacy to rotation, and an approximate renormalization operator.

Determination of the threshold of the break-up of invariant tori in a class of three frequency Hamiltonian systems
We consider a class of Hamiltonians with three degrees of freedom that can be mapped into quasi-periodically driven pendulums. The purpose of this paper is to determine the threshold of the break-up of invariant tori with a specific frequency vector. We apply two techniques : the frequency map analysis and renormalizationgroup methods. The renormalization transformation acting on a Hamiltonian ...
متن کاملFolding tori and Chenciner bubbles in an ENSO model with delayed feedback
We consider the sudden disappearance of stable invariant tori in a delay differential equation (DDE) model of the coupled El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) system. This phenomenon can be explained by the folding of invariant tori and their resonance tongues, which are associated with bifurcation structures referred to as Chenciner bubbles. We identify and analyse a Chenciner bubble and show h...
متن کاملAn Approximate Renormalization for the Break-up of Invariant Tori with Three Frequencies
Renormalization theory provides a description of the destruction of invariant tori for Hamiltonian systems of 11/2 or 2 degrees of freedom, and explains the self-similarity and the universality of the structures observed. A similar theory for higher dimensional Hamiltonian systems has proved elusive. Here we construct an approximate renormalization for a Hamiltonian system with 21/2 degrees of ...
متن کاملContinuation of Quasi-periodic Invariant Tori
Many systems in science and engineering can be modelled as coupled or forced nonlinear oscillators, which may possess quasi-periodic or phase-locked invariant tori. Since there exist routes to chaos involving the break-down of invariant tori, these phenomena attract considerable attention. This paper presents a new algorithm for the computation and continuation of quasiperiodic invariant tori o...
متن کاملA periodically forced flow displaying symmetry breaking via a three-tori gluing bifurcation and two-tori resonances
The dynamics due to a periodic forcing (harmonic axial oscillations) in a Taylor–Couette apparatus of finite length is examined numerically in an axisymmetric subspace. The forcing delays the onset of centrifugal instability and introduces a Z2 symmetry that involves both space and time. This paper examines the influence of this symmetry on the subsequent bifurcations and route to chaos in a on...
